A First Visit to Hobart

From historic streets and waterfront views to museums, gardens and mountain scenery, these are some of the places we recommend for a first visit to Hobart.

Salamanca Place

Best for Atmosphere & Heritage

Salamanca Place is one of Hobart’s most recognisable areas, known for its historic sandstone buildings, cafés, restaurants, galleries and shops.

It sits right beside the waterfront and is an easy starting point for exploring central Hobart.

Good for: Walking · cafés · shopping · photography · dining

Salamanca Market

Best for a Saturday Morning

If your stay includes a Saturday, Salamanca Market is one of Hobart’s classic experiences.

Browse stalls selling Tasmanian food, local produce, crafts, gifts and handmade products in the heart of Salamanca.

Good for: Local produce · souvenirs · food · gifts · atmosphere

Battery Point

Best for Historic Hobart

Just behind Salamanca, Battery Point is one of Hobart’s most charming historic neighbourhoods.

Take a slow walk through its quiet streets, heritage cottages and village atmosphere, particularly around Arthur Circus and Hampden Road.

Good for: Walking · heritage · cafés · photography

Hobart Waterfront

Best for a Relaxed City Walk

Hobart’s waterfront is one of the easiest places to enjoy the city at a slower pace.

Walk around the harbour, watch the boats, stop for coffee or seafood, and enjoy views across the River Derwent.

Good for: Walking · seafood · harbour views · families · photography

Constitution Dock

Best for Harbour Views

Constitution Dock is a small but iconic part of Hobart’s waterfront and is closely associated with Tasmania’s maritime character.

It is an easy stop while walking between the city centre, waterfront and Salamanca.

Good for: Harbour views · boats · photography · short walks

MONA

Best for Something Different

The Museum of Old and New Art is one of Tasmania’s most distinctive attractions.

Known for its unusual collection, architecture and unconventional approach to art, MONA is very different from a traditional museum.

Good for: Art · architecture · rainy days · couples · longer visits

kunanyi / Mount Wellington

Best for the View

kunanyi / Mount Wellington rises above Hobart and offers some of the best panoramic views in southern Tasmania.

On a clear day, you can see across Hobart, the River Derwent and the surrounding landscape.

Good for: Views · photography · nature · short walks · sunset

Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens

Best for a Peaceful Afternoon

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens offer a quieter change of pace from central Hobart.

The gardens are ideal for a gentle walk and feature a wide variety of plants in a beautiful setting near the River Derwent.

Good for: Easy walking · gardens · families · photography · relaxing afternoons

Cascade Brewery

Best for Heritage & Local Beer

Cascade Brewery sits at the foot of kunanyi / Mount Wellington and is one of Hobart’s best-known historic landmarks.

Even if you are not planning a brewery tour, the surrounding area and heritage buildings make it a pleasant stop.

Good for: Heritage · local beer · history · couples

Cascades Female Factory Historic Site

Best for Convict History

The Cascades Female Factory is an important site for understanding Tasmania’s convict history, particularly the experiences of female convicts.

It offers a very different perspective from Hobart’s waterfront and colonial streets.

Good for: History · heritage · cultural experiences

One Day in Hobart

If this is your first visit and you only have one day, this is an easy itinerary that covers several of Hobart’s highlights without trying to do too much.

Morning

Salamanca Place → Salamanca Market if it is Saturday → Battery Point

Start around Salamanca, explore the historic streets and enjoy coffee or breakfast nearby.

Walk uphill into Battery Point before returning toward the waterfront.

Lunch

Hobart Waterfront

Choose a waterfront café, seafood restaurant or casual lunch spot around the harbour.

Take a short walk around Constitution Dock afterwards.

Afternoon

Choose one, depending on what interests you most:

  • MONA — best if you enjoy art, architecture and something unusual.
  • Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens — best for a quieter and more relaxed afternoon.
  • Cascades Female Factory — best if you are particularly interested in Tasmania’s history.

Late Afternoon / Sunset

kunanyi / Mount Wellington

If the weather is clear, finish the day with panoramic views over Hobart and the River Derwent.

If You Have More Time

With two days in Hobart, you can explore at a much more relaxed pace.

  • Day 1 — Salamanca → Battery Point → Waterfront → Mount Wellington
  • Day 2 — MONA → Botanical Gardens → North Hobart or waterfront dinner

This leaves more time to enjoy cafés, galleries and local neighbourhoods without rushing between attractions.
